Let's admit it. Sometimes it is hard to have conversations about cultural sensitivity in the workplace. It can be so difficult that some organizations will avoid the topic altogether. How do we bridge the gaps and create an inclusive culture if we never talk about it? There are a number of ways that individuals can open opportunities for dialogue. Here are 5 steps to get you started:
Challenge Your Assumptions. We all come to the workplace with our own set of ideas, beliefs, and experiences. Open your mind to alternative views. Be willing to adjust your thoughts and behaviors if they are not inclusive and considerate of other perspectives.
Acknowledge the need for information and resources. Culture and the ability to responsibly coexist in the workplace is ever evolving. Just like any skill, it is important to invest in resources that increase your knowledge. Information and training are critical to creating a cohesive team.
Create opportunities for open dialogue. You cannot change what you do not discuss. You cannot heal what you do not acknowledge. Encourage discussion about culture and how it enhances the workplace. Provide employees with the opportunity to learn more about one another through team building activities.
Listen with an open mind. Be open to hearing different points of view without being judgmental or critical. Even if you don't understand or agree with another person's view, you can still create an exchange that leaves everyone's dignity in tact and encourages understanding.
Ask questions. Ask questions when you do not understand. Interact with people who are different from you. When you seek genuine understanding, it decreases the uneasiness and discomfort around sensitive topics.
Establishing commonality and cohesiveness in the workplace is a win for the entire organization. Take an active role in facilitating meaningful conversations. The strongest teams are those that can listen to one another and adapt when necessary.
